It's All a Matter of Perspective

Every time I visit with a book club I learn something else about Par for the Curse.  Hearing a fresh perspective on your project is one of the most equisite things about being an author. I've mentioned before that while writing Par For the Curse I tried very hard not to make a judgement on the characters (which was more than difficult for me).  Who's right? Who's wrong? It's up to you.

If you haven't read the book yet, Misty is the woman that stole Stormy's husband, Brandon. Well, kind of.  Most people develop a healthy resentment for Misty when reading the story. She was having an affair with Stormy's husband and eventually moved in with him. Naturally Stormy was angry and at one point goes to the couple's new apartment building. A fight ensues between the two women while Brandon tries his best to remain neutral. Stormy slaps Misty in one of those Angela-Bassett-Waiting-to-Exhale kind of swings.

Now most people feel like Misty had it coming. However, one reader enlightened me to the perspective that Misty and Brandon were together and Stormy had no right to come into their home with an attitude.  The reader said that Misty "won" and that Stormy should "get over it and move on".  Needless to say that the rest of the club disagreed with her but I felt it my duty to defend her position. After all, Par for the Curse is written so that you can develop your own opinion of each character. The reader felt connected to Misty. She understood her position. In life our perspectives and opinions are shaped by our own experiences and those same experiences shape the way we read and connect with a story.

Stormy Speaks on #Crazybabymamas as Trending Topic on Twitter

I normally enjoy my time on twitter. It's a great way for me to keep up with all the latest news and there are some entertaining people I follow. However, today I was incensed with that rapper guy Fabolous who is trending the topic #crazybabymamas. It was all fun and some very entertaining posts at first then he said, "Crazy Baby Mamas get pregnant during goodbye sex on purpose". Wait just a darn minute! I did not get pregnant on purpose and I don't consider myself a "baby mama". I am Brandon's ex-wife and I have every right to carry his child. We would both be very excited about our little oops if it weren't for Misty's irresponsible behavior. How on earth do you get pregnant by someone else's husband? What a sleaze bag!!! If I were Riley I'd call her something else. Anyway, I happen to believe that so many people get pregnant with goodbye sex because it's so passionate. You read Chapter 2 didn't you? That was the most incredible sex Brandon and I had since...well since ever. I'm not a crazy baby mama. I'm a devoted ex-wife who is trying to get her husband back.
